Grocery Roll-out!

What is the Community Grocery?

For over 30 years, Christian charity The Message Trust have been sharing the love of Jesus in words and actions with the hardest-to-reach young people and communities. Across the UK and beyond, you’ll find their teams working in schools, tough communities, prisons, supporting ex-offenders and helping to keep families fed through Community Groceries.

The impact of their work is huge. Crime rates in communities fall, families don’t go hungry, young people find their true value and lives are transformed as people find hope.

During the first Covid lockdown in 2020 The Message Trust delivered 60,000 meals and food parcels to homes and families across Wythenshawe who would have struggled to put food on the table without a bit of extra help.

Then came the Community Grocery. Acting as a bridge between foodbanks and supermarkets, the stores provide families who would otherwise go hungry with access to affordable food they can choose themselves. Each shop in store costs a member just £4.

Step inside a grocery and you’ll find a range of food options fresh from local supermarkets, meaning our members can come and shop for their whole family at the fraction of the cost of a supermarket. Through their food sourcing, the stores also save hundreds of tonnes of food being wasted each year.

"I would wholeheartedly recommend them and am looking forward to continuing to work with them in the future."

Ted Trim, IT Manager at The Message Trust

The Challange

This project has involved the rapid opening of more than 20 Community Groceries across the country in a short space of time and from an IT perspective, with often limited notice, due to the funding structure of the project. Internet connectivity, Wi-Fi, POS equipment and security have all been major factors with this project, and the quick turnaround of hardware during a huge global shortage is extremely important as well.

Working with a reseller partner who understands the organisation and its values, along with of the requirements of the project (and importantly, timescales regarding the supply of the equipment) was an absolute priority. So, The Message Trust chose to work with Clarion and their account manager Dylan.

The Solution

As demand for Community Groceries grew the network, of stores grew quickly and when looking to rollout out shop IT infrastructure and tills, we were able to fully understand the customer’s needs and tailor a solution to them. With our vast supply chain and access to stock all across the UK and Europe, Clarion were able to provide all of the vital components the customer required in good time, helping to ensure the stores were up and running as quickly as possible.

We worked to come up with a kit list consisting of Ubiquiti networking equipment and Apple devices, required for all new stores, all based on available products that would give the customer all the functionality they need within their stores. Very tight timescales and quick turnarounds were vital.

Again, due to the funding implications here, Clarion were able to offer extended payment terms to the charity as well, to allow them to focus on getting the groceries up and running and helping families in need, as a matter or urgency.
